Ever dreamed of making your own body butter, that you can customize to your own liking? Well to your luck, it is much easier than you think!
Today I will share the recipe for my all time favourite homemade body butter, that actually feels like butter on the skin. Made with only natural, clean ingredients and love - exactly, what your skin deserves.
Coconut oil
Coconut oil, which is derived from the flesh of coconuts, is one of the most popular oils used in skin- and haircare. It offers deep hydration for both skin and hair, has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties as well as helps to reduces wrinkles and fine lines.
When choosing between different coconut oils, I always recommend choosing a cold pressed, unrefined, organic coconut oil. This one from Nutiva is an excellent choice!
Shea butter
Shea butter, which is derived from the nuts of the vitellaria paradoxa tree, is known for its deeply moisturizing properties, and has been used for centures in skincare, haircare as well as medicinal applications.
As with all the other ingredients, I recommend looking for a pure, unrefined shea butter. This one from Yellow Brick Road is a perfect choice as it is not only pure and unrefined but also sustainable and ethically crafted!
Jojoba oil
Jojoba oil, which is derived from the seeds of the jojoba plant (simmondsia chinensis), has a versatile profile of benefits for both skin and hair. Jojoba oil is one of the oils that comes closes to the skin’s natural sebum - making it a lightweight, non-greasy oil, that absorbs easily into the skin. Jojoba oil is rich in antioxidants, which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Remember to use a jojoba oil of high quality like this one from Cliganic, which is organic, cold pressed, and hexane free!
Almond oil
Almond oil, which is extracted from sweet almonds (prunus amygdalus), has been used for centuries for its numerous health and beauty benefits. Almond oil hydrates and softens the skin, it is rich in antioxidants, which can help with wrinkles and fine lines as well as help with soothing irritated skin and reducing inflammation.
Vitamin E oil
Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant-rich oil and is often used in skincare and haircare to promote health of both skin and hair. It acts as a natural preservative due to its antioxidant properties, which helps to slow down the oxidation process that causes oils and fats to go rancid.
Frankincense essential oil
Frankincense oil, which is derived from the resin of the boswellia tree, has been used for thousands of years for its therapeutic, spiritual and cosmetic benefits. Frankincense offers anti-aging properties, which is why I love adding it to my homemade face oil. Furthermore, it has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties and the smell of it can help to ground yourself - which ultimately can help reduce stress and anxiety.
Frankincense is also known as olibanum.
I love this frankincense essential oil from Majestic Pure, as it is 100% pure and natural!
Lavender essential oil
Lavender, which is extracted from the flowers of the lavandula angustifolia plant, is one of the most popular essential oils used in aromatherapy and holistic wellness. Lavender is known for its calming aroma, which promotes relaxation, reduces stress and may alleviate anxiety and depression. It supports the health of the skin by soothing irritated skin, healing wounds and cut as well as being anti-aging for the skin.
Recipe
5 tbsp of Shea Butter
5 tbsp of Coconut Oil
2,5 tbsp of Jojoba Oil
2,5 tbsp of Almond Oil
Optional: 5-10 drops of essential oil of your choice - I usually use a mix of Frankincense and Lavender
Optional: 5 drops of Vitamin E Oil
Melt the shea butter and coconut oil gently in a water bath - use low heat to protect the oils
Remove from the water bath once melted and add the jojoba oil and almond oil and mix - these oils do not tolerate the same heat as shea and coconut does
Add essential oils of your choice as well as vitamin E, if wanted
Cover the bowl with all the oils, and place in freezer for 30 minutes - or until the mixture has thickened/hardened
Whip the thickened mixture with a hand mixer until it turns into a fluffy, white consistency
Pour into an airtight container and enjoy your homemade body butter!
Tips for making and using your homemade body butter
I hope you will love your homemade body butter as much as I love mine. What i especially love about making my own skincare, is that I can customize it in so many ways. An easy way to customize it, is by choosing your favourite essential oil, to enrich the butter with your favourite scent.
For optimal benefits of the body butter, I recommend using it after showering, while your skin is still damp - this will help your skin absorb the butter even better.
Adding vitamin E oil will give the body butter a shelf life of 6 months.
