There's nothing better than a cozy cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day! That’s why I love this rich and creamy recipe—made without refined sugar—so you can indulge in a warm, comforting treat without the guilt. Sweetened naturally and packed with wholesome ingredients, this healthier hot chocolate is the perfect way to satisfy your cravings while nourishing your body.
Cacao Powder
Cacao powder is packed with benefits! It is rich in antioxidants, magnesium and iron and contains theobromine, which is a natural stimulant that enhances focus, improves mood, and provides a gentle energy boost without the crash.
I recommend getting an organic pure cacao powder, like this one from NOW Foods.
Ceylon Cinnamon
A warm, aromatic spice known for its blood sugar-balancing and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a delicious and healthy addition to this recipe.
Regular cinnamon contains higher amounts of coumarin than Ceylon Cinnamon. Coumarin is toxic to the liver and kidneys. Therefore, I recommend Ceylon Cinnamon since it contains much less coumarin (almost nothing) than regular cinnamon. I recommend this one from Simply Organic!
Natural Sweetener
Refined sugar, like white and brown sugar, is heavily processed, stripped of nutrients, and can cause blood sugar spikes, energy crashes, and inflammation. Over time, excessive consumption may contribute to health issues like insulin resistance and metabolic imbalances.
Natural sweeteners, such as raw honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, and dates, provide a more wholesome alternative. They contain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants while offering a gentler effect on blood sugar levels. Some, like stevia and monk fruit, are even calorie-free!
For this recipe I usually use agave nectar or maple syrup. I always look for organic brands for best quality produce.
